Viva Espana Ole World Cup Soccer Finale Hand of God and Now Referee of God Disgusting Standard of Refereeing in 2010.
Congratulations Spain, you are officially the world soccer champions for the next four years. I in no way want to detract from the fact that you have officially been crowned soccer supremos. However, you know as well as I do that the referee played a decisive role in your victory today.
WE all saw a blatant corner kick created by the ball bouncing off the shoulder of a Spanish defender. The referee gave a goal kick instead. The Dutch players were all in the mindset of a corner when Spain kicked off and trapped the Dutch napping. No doubt it was a beautiful, clinical goal by Iniesta for Spain. I am not disputing the goal but the goal would not have been had the corner kick been given.
When Spain was helped by the referee to score a goal they must have felt that he was the referee of God sent to help them. No doubt the referee was a gracious gift to Spain.
The refereeing standard has to be improved or else soccer will go on a downward spiral because of refereeing disputes caused by bad calls. FIFA will also have to revisit the appointment of referees for the final. Would justice not have been better served by using Australian or Asian of African officials for an all European final?
Poor refereeing saw the early return of team USA after legitimate goals had been disallowed. England was robbed of a chance and so was Mexico. It is absolutely disgusting that the world cup is refereed by incompetent referees. A world class game needs a world class referee.
Robben was obviously upset that he was sandwiched in a run on goal and when he voiced his opinion he was yellow carded. I do not even have the strength to write about the refereeing bungles because it is so disgusting to spend time, effort and money on the world cup and then it is marred by poor refereeing.
Please let sanity prevail and approve the use of instant replay technology. Bring soccer into our technology savvy 21 st century, please. It will initially slow down the game but it will give a sense of fair play. The acting by the players that makes it difficult to distinguish between real and pretend fouls will finally be kept in check.
Do not let soccer be glorified with "hand of God" and "referee of God" titles. Upgrade the standard of refereeing, please.

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)To suggest that the ref was supporting Spain when he clearly needed to red card De Jong and van Bommel in the first half makes it clear that you haven't a clue. I was a fan of the Netherlands until I saw their performance in this WC. Anyone who could support this team and the whiny, diving Robben needs their head examined. I'm no fan of the Spanish, but the Dutch team was a disgrace. Try thinking before you right another article. The refereeing was bad!
