Wow, we hear, read about and see visual images of natural disasters of dizzying proportions as it leaves destruction, tragedy, pain, disruption, and ruins in its wake. Where is God when all of this is befalling humankind? Why does God not stop this? Why does God not intervene? Where is God when we cry, enough? Where is God when humankind is inhumane to humankind? Does God not love us anymore? Has God forsaken us? Were those theorists right when they "proved" that God wound us up like a watch and has just left to clock to run down on us? They said that God is not omnipotent and omniscient.

Are they right? No a thousand and one times no. God does care. God does love. He holds me and you, he holds us in the palm of his hands. Our names are engraved on the palms of His hands as he gently holds us while continuously breathing life into us that sustains us. He has according to Isaiah 43:1 But now, this is what the LORD says--he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. And in Genesis 32:28 He said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed." He knows me and holds me.

He will not amend natural law. He will not mess with the rising of the sun and the setting of the same. He will not let day be night and night be day. However, He has given me free will to exercise choice. I can choose to do good or evil. I can become the extension of the loving hands of God as I help others overcome and recover in times of these disasters.

Natural disasters do unsettle me sometimes but when I see us going to war against each other, when I see nations rising up against each other in order to seek and destroy human life then I sometimes say to God why O Father did you give my brothers and sisters free will. They are not choosing to do the right thing.

Then I am also reminded about my parent and their love for me. Now I know how it pained them when I chose to go my evil ways. Their excruciating pain never cancelled my sonship nor ended their parental relationship with me. Oh, even if I tried in my momentary foolish pride and stubbornness to declare a UDIFPA (unilateral declaration of independence from parental authority) they remained steadfast parents in spite of the pain and disagreement with what I was doing.

God wants us to extend His hands, His love to those in need. The natural law of life will stay in tack and will not allow chaos to dominate. God will continue to love us even if we choose to hate him or to not believe in Him. He will remain the God that is on the side of the suffering, the oppressed, the poor, the despised and the needy.

Good will ultimately triumph over evil!

I welcome your comments in the hope that you find this affirmation of my faith in God encouraging.

Mary-Anne,

I think you are giving too much credit to the devil. The devil does not have that much power. The earth is very old and it is time for it to destroy its people and start fresh, this has nothing to to with eveil.

Yes, Michael, we live in a broken, fallen world. The evidence abounds, whether in the form of man's inhumanity to man or natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis. ~mogama~
