Michael Phelps stated that he London will be his last Olympic swimming competition. Michael has had a great swimming career and always said that he will not swim competitively after 30. He should be commended for knowing when to stop and not go on and on and on like some athletes do until they have to switch gears and stand in line for their social security.

I think that it harms the sport when an athlete do not know when to quit or may be forced to quit in disgrace. I can think of so many athletes who were hanging on for just one more series or just one more thrill and that in fact was their undoing. They fell from grace and admiration.

It is vital for the sport that icons become mentors and that the younger generation can start the sport when they are in the prime of their life and not have to wait for grandpa or grandma to step out of the way. If our next generation can only step up to the flay when the oldies have finally exited, then they will get to the plate old and competition will eventually become the golden oldies world cup or world series.

I am just hoping that Michael will keep his word and not change his mind. In any event he does not need more money, glory or adulation. He has the world at his swimming side.

I salute Michael for his accomplishments and forgive him all his transgressions. Long live Michael Phelps.
