Life is so short and yet fond or sad memories have an impact that can prolong the agony or handicap the cycle of life. I have just been reunited with my 85 year old cousin. She is the daughter of my late father's oldest sister. The last time Cousin Cathy and I saw each other was at the funeral service of our late grandfather. Well Cathy visited with me at the time of the life shattering earthquake in Haiti. We felt doubly blessed because while people were frantically scrambling for their family members, Cathy and I were embracing each other. We spent hours just filling in the blanks. Oh yes, we remembered the time when a family member died, was given birth to or was sick in hospital or had moved locations.

Ironically when my family and I relocated to the United States, Cathy relocated to South Africa. Family members are special and precious. We should not wait for a disaster to strike to be reminded of our need for and love of family. Why can we not just live together in peace with each other? Why can we who are blood relatives not honor the lineage of our ancestors? Why can we not realize that we were given birth to by the same mom and dad? Even brothers and sisters are often at war with each other. It is pretty stupid.

My prayers are with the people of Haiti. My prayers are with family and friends as they hope against all hope for surviving family members. I hope that you find your friends. It was great to see the evidence of faith and hope as survivors were looking for each other and for loved ones. It was great to hear Haitians say that they shall overcome. It was great to see the rescue efforts. It was great to see other nations come to the rescue of Haiti and its people. It was great to see the American presidents join forces to support Haiti.

Cathy and I said prayers for Haitians because we know the tragedy and the trauma that kept us apart for 43 years. We finally triumphed over adversity. May the inconvenient earthquake be the start of a new era for Haiti and its wonderful people.
