It was the year 1979. I remember some of the significant events of this year. This was the year of the Iranian revolution and hostage crisis. It was also the international year of the child and China adopted its One Child Policy. I remember snow falling in the Sahara desert in Africa for the first time. Star Trek the motion picture was released. Many of these events can still be considered "unfinished business" because it is still in the news almost daily. This was the year when Manachem Begin of Israel and Anwar Sadat of Egypt signed a peace treaty at the White House while President Carter was in office. Bishop Abel Muzorewa became the first black Prime Minister of Rhodesia and Saddam Hussein became the President of Iraq.  Chrysler (Motor) Corporation asked the US government for a bailout to prevent filing for bankruptcy. Recession, stimulus, bailout;  I have heard this before the onset of this chilling economic season.

People are going crazy as they try to make sense of the money left in their pocket against the background of the current global economic crisis.  Do I want to go crazy or do I want to retain my sanity.  In order to retain sound mental health I will control some things I can control in spite of my shrinking bank balance and ballooning credit card balance.  May I humbly share it with you?

1.     Don't worry about your money. Worry is not a requirement of this global economic crisis. Worry is the deposit you pay on a service you will never receive. The time you spend worrying is wasted. Instead of worrying, do something; take action. You will do something.

 2.     Don't try to be perfect. The people who are trying to make you believe that you have to be perfect are themselves not perfect. Society should allow you to be the best you can be. You will do the best you can.

 3.     Don't try to be all things to all people. People are fickle, pernickety and change all the time.  You cannot please all of the people all of the time. You will be the best you can.

 4.     Occasionally leave undone those things that ought to be done.  Just relax. Slow down. Whether you do or whether you don't, none of us are going to get out of this world alive. Don't damn life; don't dam life; let it flow.

 5.     Don't spread yourself too thinly.   Choose areas of input wisely. Learn to say "No" when it is best for you. Saying yes to everybody and everything is not a good thing and will get you into trouble.

 6.     Schedule time to be alone; all by yourself. Enjoy being by yourself . You will be your own best company. This is your time to reflect, to meditate, to pray to get in touch with your feelings, your fears, your aspirations.

 7.     Switch off and do nothing at regular intervals. Just veg and enjoy the moment. You do not have to act busy all the time. Let life come to you. Let life show its appreciation to you. Stop running because you cannot run  away from yourself.

 8.     Be boring, inelegant and untidy at times. You may just for today, stay in your pj's, not shower, not put on mascara, not shave, not make your bed and not brush your hair. Brush your teeth though and flush the toilet. Admire the clutter in your study; it is a work of art and there is order in the chaos.

 9.     Do not blame yourself, do not be ashamed or even feel guilty. The past is gone and you cannot change it. The past simply means; Perception, Activated, Survival, Trigger. Do not just survive, live. Reframe, rethink reposition yourself to get different results. You can shape your future. Change your role from always pursuing to being pursued.

 10.    Do not be your own worst enemy, but be your own best friend. Stop hurting yourself. Your life is worth more than money, assets, status and prestige. Oh by the way you better get some new friends because the many friends of the abundant times have disappeared.

Have a great day and do not forget to say a prayer for yourself and for others.

Hi there, Michael. I like #8 best: "8. Be boring, inelegant and untidy at times. You may just for today, stay in your pj's, not shower, not put on mascara, not shave, not make your bed and not brush your hair. Brush your teeth though and flush the toilet. Admire the clutter in your study; it is a work of art and there is order in the chaos." I thought your article was about practical financial advice. Anyway, thanks for the write. ~mogama~

Thanks for your comments. For me money is not everything. I can have 25 cnets and all Gods promises and I am more than a billionaire.

I am dealing with people locally who feel that the world has ended because they have lost money  with their stocks and bonds. There is more to life than money as you well know. Was this a misleading strategy then? I am always teachable.
